I think I may have overlooked the initial hurdles when considering the chances of going on. But seeing how many chance encounters there are that don't seem to be tied to Alec's impending departure--there could have been more of those during the time of Maurice's stay at Penge after that first appointment with Lasker Jones. If he was the sole guest, and if Clive and Anne spent a fair amount of time canvassing, there could be further opportunities for them to interact. There's always the possibility of an accident, slight injury that might get them to put the class boundaries aside for a moment, which in turn might lead them to recognise what they want from the other. Or something like that.
