You may have a point there...but I think Maurice, up until the point when he sleeps with Alec that first time, has tried himself to work out what the 'friend' means, and it's his lack of knowledge on this that makes him assign various meanings to it as he goes through his young life. When he meets Alec I think everything he had thought about the matter was swept aside and he fully realised that it was a person such as Alec (or George) who he had been dreaming about. I don't think he would carry on with any other meaning after that. I think he capitalises it because it's one of the most important things in his life, not because of any Classical references. In fact, I can't remember if Maurice has eschewed the Classics by this point, but I'm positive he believes they are pretty pointless in real life and, as such, I think he would challenge the idea that 'friend' had a Classical aspect after he'd worked it out.
