I'm thinking about Alec when considering Maurice and Clive's unsuitability for one another. I do agree that they do complement each other, however Maurice ultimately does end up with a partner who is physical, and who no doubt matches him in strength.

I think Clive is good as a first love, the one who gets Maurice's brain into some kind of forward gear instead of sitting in neutral for ever more...but I just can't help but think that even this early on, we're being shown their overall incompatibility.
